Hi. My name is Megan, and I’m a recovering engineer.
Owner of Highlight Design Studio
You read that right, an engineer. I have two degrees in civil engineering, so you may be wondering what the heck I’m doing running a graphic design/stationery business. Don’t worry, I often wonder that myself.
I first started making my own cards when I was 10. My mom had picked up the hobby of rubber stamping and I often joined her at her “stamping parties.” I was almost always the only kid there, but I really enjoyed it and was often known to do my own thing and change up the design a little bit with my own card.
Flash forward about 15 years; I was still making my own cards but preferred to mix traditional rubber-stamping techniques with digital artwork. Since I was also at the beginning of my engineering career, I didn’t have much time for my favorite creative outlets: card-making, scrapbooking, and baking. I always made time to make and send holiday cards but not much else.
When I got engaged, I was determined to hand-address every invitation, so I started learning calligraphy. Calligraphy led to hand lettering; hand lettering led to graphic design, and bada-bing, bada-boom, I ended up designing all the stationery (save the dates, invitations, menus, maps, signs, etc.) for my wedding.
One week after our wedding, my husband and I picked up and moved from the southern tip of Florida to the northwestern corner of Washington State. You see, my husband is in the Coast Guard, so we move every 2-4 years. For me, this also means job searching every 2-4 years. I decided that instead of finding someone to hire me, I would hire myself. Then I would have a job wherever we went…sounds easy enough, right?
Well, first I had some more learning to do. I earned a certificate in digital and graphic design, and I took some business courses to make sure everything was on the up and up (and that our finances didn’t go down and down). And after all that hard work, I present to you: Highlight Design Studio, where the best things in life get highlighted!
As I said at the top, I’m a recovering engineer. I love logistics, problem-solving, and project management. I bring my engineering skills to the design world to make high-quality cards that are quick and convenient for you, my customer, to buy, print, and send. I also love doing custom work, so please see our Contact page to inquire about something unique to you.
The best things in life get highlighted…but not everyone is on Instagram, so you need to mail cards too!
